Një tërmet me magnitudë 6.3 ka goditur Ishullin Jugor të Zelandës së Re, një orë pasi tërmeti i parë vrau  dy persona.

Tërmeti i dytë goditi në orën 13:45 sipas orës lokale në një thellësi prej 10 km (6 milje), në verilindje të Christchurch.

Një tërmet 7.5-magnitudë, me të njëjtën thellësi, goditi fillimisht  të njëjtën zonë pak pas mesnate, duke shkaktuar paralajmërime cunami.

Banorëve përreth lumit Clarence – një nga më të mëdhenjt në Ishullin e Jugut – po u kërkohet të lëvizin menjëherë në një sipërfaqe më të lartë.

Një tërmet i fuqishëm prej 7.8 ballësh goditi Zelandën e Re pas mesnate ( me orën lokale).

Zelanda e Re shtrihet në “unazën famëkeqe të zjarrit”, çka sjell tërmete të shumta dhe shpërthime vullkanike në Paqësor.

Gazeta Herald tha se lëkundja është ndjerë gjatë gjithë rrugës për Wellington, ndërsa njerëzit kanë dalë nga ndërtesat e tyre, disa prej të cilëve duke qarë.
